The 6 best hikes around Klagenfurt am Wörthersee
Here we describe some of the most beautiful hiking tours around Klagenfurt. Depending on your preference, the starting point is either the city centre of Klagenfurt or the Sandwirth or a place nearby that you can reach by car or by public transport. Hills, peaks or a view of Lake Wörthersee await you.
Koschutawand and Koschutahaus
The landmark of the Karawanken is the Koschutawand. It consists of impressive limestone pillars that rise steeply into the air. The Koschutahaus is located directly in front of this backdrop. This is a managed shelter that invites you to take a cosy break during the hike.
The hike directly from Sandwirth takes around five hours for experienced hikers. However, it is also possible to reach the Koschutahaus by car via a gravel track. Or you can drive to Ferlach and walk the rest of the way from there.
Hike to the Pyramidenkogel with a view of Lake Wörthersee
The route is picturesque and shows the beauty of Lake Wörthersee. The paths along the route are easy to walk on. The hike leads along the southern shore of Lake Wörthersee to Raunach and St. Margarethen. From there, the route heads towards Keutschacher See and then uphill to the Pyramidenkogel. There are various places to stop for refreshments along the way, such as the Karawankenblick restaurant.
The route is around 18 kilometres long. The easy hike from Sandwirth takes around four hours. If you prefer, you can also cover part of the route by public transport.
Märchenwiese in the Bodental valley
This hike in the picturesque Bodental valley, framed by the Karawanken mountains, leads along easy paths. At the end of the hike, you reach the fairytale meadow, which some say is Carinthia’s most beautiful mountain meadow. Even inexperienced hikers can manage this route. However, if you walk from the hotel, you will need good stamina, as it takes around seven hours to complete the one-way route. However, there is a car park in the destination area (Meerauge) from which you can start. This significantly shortens the walking distance. Alternatively, you can take public transport to Ferlach and set off from there.
Wörthersee circular hiking trail
Around 55 kilometres of hiking trail wind around Lake Wörthersee, from where you can enjoy fantastic views of the lake. Even though the entire route is probably too far for most people to cover in just one stage, it offers various sections that are ideal for a day hike – for example from Raunach in the south to Velden in the west of Lake Wörthersee. There are various viewpoints and refreshment stops along the way.
Hike to the Klagenfurter Hütte
Through the Bärental valley you reach the Klagenfurter Hütte, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Hochstuhl. The mountain on the border with Slovenia rises more than 2,200 metres into the air. The Klagenfurter Hütte itself is located at an altitude of 1663 metres.
A good starting point for the hike is Feistritz im Rosental. However, a hike from Sandwirth to the hut is also possible, but requires a little stamina, as the one-way route takes around eight hours. Alternatively, you can also cover part of the route by public transport.
From Pörtschach to Moosburg and back
This tour connects several lakes at once: it starts in Pörtschach on Lake Wörthersee. From there, the route leads past Damnig Pond to Moosburg Mitterteich and then back to Pörtschach via Mühlteich.
The entire hike is around 12 kilometres long. There are only 290 metres of ascent to overcome. Most of the paths are easy to walk on.
